The 6 Small Interior Changes You Can Make for Spring

If, like us, you’re beginning to notice the warmer breeze and blossom in the trees, you’d be right in thinking spring has sprung.

The season of renewal has us creeping out of hibernation, and as we look at our homes, we may begin to realise that our cleaning schedule has slipped behind. But don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Biologically, humans have an excuse for being lazy in the winter. Our bodies struggle to adapt to shorter days and longer nights, meaning cleaning may fall further down our list of priorities. But with the temperature finally warming, now is the time for an interior re-vamp.

Check out our top 7 small interior changes you can make for spring.

1. Invest in an electric fireplace

Just because it is sunny doesn’t mean it’s warm: don’t fall for it!

Spring, while definitely not sub-zero, can still be chilly. If you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive top-up of energy-efficient warmth, there are plenty of electric fireplaces online.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of online retailers offer fantastic prices on big-name brands. You can get a hole-in-the-wall fire from UK manufacturer Be Modern. Or, you can purchase a space-saving freestanding stove, courtesy of Elgin & Hall.

These electric appliances only need a nearby socket for operation. Just plug it in, flick the switch, and you’ll have instant access to 1–2 kW of electric-powered heat.

2. Swap out heavy curtains for linen ones

While heavy curtains, such as velvet or thick brocade, are excellent for insulation during colder months, the slightly warmer temperatures of spring can make these dense fabrics feel rather stuffy.

Linen is your springtime saviour! As a natural fabric known for its lightness, linen is breathable and easy to maintain.

The thinner texture of linen curtains means sunlight can gently filter through, permeating rooms with a brightness that’s not as harsh as direct light. Beyond functionality, these beautiful curtains come in any number of spring tones.

Purchase them in pastels, purples, greens or oranges for that extra touch of spring.

3. Introduce seasonal flowers

Florals in spring? ‘Groundbreaking,’ you might think. But there’s a reason this interior trend is a failsafe. Using seasonal flowers in and around your home can help mark the shift from sleepy winter to a more open and cheerful atmosphere.

Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and narcissus, for example, are all in season in the UK between March and May, and their arrival often coincides with warmer weather.

After months spent in darkness, their soft, pastel colours can create a much-needed sense of brightness. Best of all, you don’t need to be a professional florist! A single bunch of tulips in a jug on a kitchen table can be just as beautiful as a larger display.

4. Rearrange furniture to let more light in

Are you itching to change the layout of your furniture? If something about the Feng Shui of your space is rubbing you the wrong way, now is the perfect time for a switch around.

During winter, it’s normal to pull sofas and chairs closer together, often around a fire or TV. The aim here is comfort. But once spring arrives, that same layout can feel a little heavy.

So, to let the light in, start by looking at your windows: are there any bulky pieces, like armchairs, cabinets or side tables, sitting in front of them? Moving those out of the way can instantly open things up.

You should also think about the flow of the room: if you’ve got pieces with solid, low-to-the-ground bases, swapping them for options with slimmer legs can give the illusion of more space.

5. Switch to cotton or linen bedding

Similar to our curtain tip, spring is an excellent time for doing away with heavier, bulkier bedding.

Everyone knows that cotton is great for comfort: it allows air to circulate, which can help regulate your body’s temperature as you sleep. Cotton is equally easy to care for, so it’s a low-maintenance option until it comes time to wash your sheets.

If you’ve been struggling to feel rested and have yet to make this change, note that transitioning from heavier winter materials can actually improve your sleep quality. You can also purchase linen bedding, another springtime favourite.

Linen, made from flax fibres, has natural moisture-wicking properties. It tends to feel cool to the touch, which can certainly be a bonus for warmer evenings.

6. Use citrus/floral-scented candles

It’s not all about looks! Sometimes, imbuing your home with a sense of spring is best accomplished with smells. Offer family, friends and guests a gentle reminder of blooming flowers with floral fragrances, like rose, jasmine, and peony.

Brighter citrus fragrances, such as lemon, bergamot, and neroli, can bring a more energising quality to your home. Place these scents where you spend the most time, such as the living room or kitchen.

Keep your floral candles in areas where you want to relax, such as a lounge or a guest bedroom for instance. You can purchase candles for this purpose, or dilute essential oils using a water diffuser. There are plenty of inexpensive ways to give each room a unique springtime quality.
